A rare and authentic adventure into the heart of Hawai`i awaits you! Prepare to experience firsthand the ancient Hawaiian fishing village at Pu`ala`a on the scenic Puna coast. Established more than 1000 years ago, the village thrived until the mid-1800’s. Not a reconstruction, the village is kept in it’s pristine natural state while being carefully documented by the students of Kua o ka La, a Hawaiian culturally driven Public Charter School that now calls the site home. The oceanfront village is alive with archeological features and a rare lowland rainforest. After a powerful entrance chant, follow your guides on a once-in-a-lifetime interactive exploration of the village grounds and forest. Enjoy a delicious picnic-style deli lunch at a working macadamia nut and honey farm with the beverage of your choice including cold locally brewed beer and chilled champagne before traveling along the breathtaking Puna coast. Black lava cliffs, local fishermen casting into the surf, an evergreen forest hovering over the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean, photo opportunities abound as you make your way to the village of Kalapana to witness the birth of the islands first-hand. Walk over the recent lava flows that destroyed the village of Kalapana in 1990 to the new black sand beach at Kaimu. Look for ocean entries, lava outbreaks, and the erupting vent, Pu`u O`o, only a few miles away!
Molten lava will not be seen on this tour. Comfortable, closed toe walking shoes are re-quired. Itinerary direction may change.
